What it is
Solar panels make electricity in the day. A battery stores what you don’t use straight away, so you can use it in the evening or overnight.
Designing both together means one hybrid inverter, one app and a system sized around how you actually use power.
We design solar and battery systems together for homes and businesses in Ivybridge, Plymouth, the South Hams and across South Devon.
Who it suits
- Homes that are out in the day and use most power in the evening
- Families with higher evening usage
- Homes with, or planning, an EV or heat pump
- Anyone wanting to make the most of their own generation
Why it’s worth it
The benefits
Use more of your own solar
Store surplus for the evening rather than exporting it all.
Lower bills
Buy less from the grid, especially at peak times.
One tidy system
Panels, battery and inverter designed and installed together.
Backup options
Some systems can keep key circuits running in a power cut.
Things to consider
- A bigger upfront investment than solar alone.
- Savings depend on your usage, tariff and roof.
- The battery needs a suitable location.
Payback
How long does it take to pay back?
For many of the projects we work on, the payback period is between five and eight years. That’s far shorter than the 25 years it could take 10 to 15 years ago, when panels cost more and were less efficient.
Your own figure depends on your roof, how much electricity you use and your tariff, and we’ll work it out with you at survey.
Typical prices
What solar and battery storage typically costs
Prices are for a two-storey house with medium-to-high quality brands. Cheaper brands could lower the price, and premium brands could raise it.
Prices include scaffolding and certification. In-roof is priced at 1.3× the solar and roof-works part, and flat roof is 15% less on that part; batteries, inverters and gateways cost the same on any roof.
All prices are exclusive of VAT.
Prices are a guide and subject to a site survey, or photos you send us, so we can give you an accurate quote.
Quotes are always free. Send us a few photos and we can usually give you a reasonably accurate quote without a visit, so there’s no need to take time off work or wait in for us.
What’s included
What a typical install includes
Survey and design
Roof, usage and tariff reviewed to size panels and battery together.
Panels on the roof or ground
In-roof, on-roof, flat roof or ground mount, whichever suits your property.
Hybrid inverter and battery
Installed in a suitable location, with optional backup.
Handover
App setup, testing, certificates, MCS and DNO paperwork.
How it works
Four simple steps
- 1
Enquiry
Tell us about your property and what you’re after, online or on the phone.
- 2
Survey
We look at your roof or land, your usage and your supply, then send a clear estimate, usually within 5 working days.
- 3
Install
Our own team fits everything tidily: dust sheets down, clean as we go.
- 4
Handover & aftercare
We commission the system, show you the app and hand over your certificates and MCS paperwork, then call about a week later to check you’re happy.
Grid connections
Grid connections and paperwork, all handled
We have a strong working relationship with National Grid in the South West. We work with them to confirm how much your site can export and what size of solar, battery and inverter is approved for your property, whether that’s a home, business, industrial unit or farm. Every installation follows MCS, NICEIC and BS 7671 regulations. We handle the full process for you: National Grid applications, MCS registration, NICEIC certification, and your certificates and warranty documents at handover.
The technical bit: smaller systems are usually notified to the network operator after install (G98). Larger systems, which includes most commercial, industrial and farm systems, need approval before install (G99), and the network operator can set an export limit.
Rules & regulations
In plain English
A simple overview to help you plan. We check the details for your property at survey.
Planning permission
Roof-mounted solar on houses is usually permitted development, with exceptions such as listed buildings and some conservation areas. Ground mounts often need planning permission.
Battery location
We follow current guidance (PAS 63100) on where home batteries can safely be installed.
FAQs
Common questions
Should I add a battery now or later?
Good news: either works! Fitting a hybrid inverter now makes adding a battery later simpler, and we’ll explain the pros and cons of each so you can choose.
Will it pay for itself?
Yes, for many of the projects we work on, the payback period is between five and eight years, depending on your roof, usage and tariff.
How big should the system be?
Just the right size for your home, not a brochure! We size the panels and battery together at survey around your roof and how much electricity you use and when.
Can I add an EV charger too?
Yes, definitely! Smart chargers can use your surplus solar to charge your car, so on sunny days your driving can run on your own sunshine.
