What it is
Use available land, such as a garden, paddock or field, for a ground-mounted array when roof space is limited or unsuitable.
Because the frames are set to face the sun, the array can be positioned and angled for good output.
Ground mounts suit the farms, paddocks and larger gardens we see across the South Hams and rural South Devon, and we design and fit every array from our Ivybridge base.
Who it suits
- Homes with a garden, paddock or field
- Farms and rural businesses
- Properties where the roof faces the wrong way or is shaded
- Anyone who would rather leave the roof untouched
Why it’s worth it
The benefits
Flexible placement
Positioned and angled for the sun rather than limited by your roof.
Easy access
Panels at ground level are simple to clean and maintain.
Room to grow
Larger arrays are possible for farms and businesses.
No roof work
Leaves your roof untouched.
Things to consider
- Ground mounts often need planning permission, depending on size, height and position.
- A cable trench is usually needed back to the house or building.
- It uses some of your land.
Pricing
Request a site survey
Every ground mount project is different. It could be a 10 square metre garden or a 50 acre farm plot, so we don’t publish a set price. One of our experienced engineers will talk through your site, energy use and grid connection with you, then visit to design a system and give you a detailed quote.

How it works
Four simple steps

Handover & aftercare
We commission the system, show you the app and hand over your certificates and MCS paperwork, then call about a week later to check you’re happy.
Grid connections
Grid connections and paperwork, all handled
We have a strong working relationship with National Grid in the South West. We work with them to confirm how much your site can export and what size of solar, battery and inverter is approved for your property, whether that’s a home, business, industrial unit or farm. Every installation follows MCS, NICEIC and BS 7671 regulations. We handle the full process for you: National Grid applications, MCS registration, NICEIC certification, and your certificates and warranty documents at handover.
The technical bit: smaller systems are usually notified to the network operator after install (G98). Larger systems, which includes most commercial, industrial and farm systems, need approval before install (G99), and the network operator can set an export limit.
Rules & regulations
In plain English
A simple overview to help you plan. We check the details for your property at survey.
Planning permission
Small ground-mounted arrays can be permitted development, but there are limits on size, height and how close they sit to your boundary, so many ground mounts need a planning application. We’ll check and help with this.
Building Regulations and electrical safety
The electrical side is designed and certified to BS 7671 (the UK wiring regulations) and notified under Part P by our NICEIC-registered team. You get your certificates at the end.
FAQs
Common questions
Do I need planning permission?
Yes, quite often for ground mounts, but don’t worry, we’ll help! It depends on the size, height and position of the array, so we’ll tell you at survey and can help with the application.
How far can the array be from the house?
Further than you might think! It can sit some distance away; the cable just needs to be sized for the run, and we plan the route at survey.
Will it pay for itself?
It can, depending on your home! Solar can help cut your electricity bills, but how quickly it pays for itself depends on your roof, how much electricity you use and when, your tariff and whether you add a battery. On many of our projects, solar and solar with a battery typically pay back in about 5–8 years.
Is it easy to clean and maintain?
Yes, that’s one of the big perks! With the panels at ground level, cleaning, checks and servicing are much simpler than on a roof.
